Below is the sort of write up we have to produce on each dog shown under FCI rules, as the Min Schnauzers were one of several breeds judged on the day they had to be fairly brief. With less dogs to judge, write ups can be more lengthy. each dog is graded after the individual crit. puppies may only receive Promising, less promising or the best is very promising. then they are placed in order, as we do here, very often only 4 places. The puppy dog will then meet the puppy bitch winner. overall winner goes on to best puppy in its group, and takes no further part in the breed. The Miniature Schnauzers here are also divided by colour. "Sort" is black, "Peber/salt" pepper & salt, "Sort/Solv" is Black & silver. the first class after puppies is usually the Junior Male. sometimes Champions are put in first. but normally its the juniors. they are from 9-15mths old, so very young puppies can still compete with the adults in most countries.
In Denmark the champions get first look. grading of every dog after the crit, either Excellent, Very Good, Good, Sufficient, or KIP, cannot be judged, usually a shy or impossible to go over exhibit, or "0" (zero) if aggressive or has some major disqualifying faults. The rules do change from country to country so it is always wise to ask questions, sometimes the Veterans &/or juniors are allowed to compete for BOB sometimes not. sometimes the juniors can win a CAC (equivalent to our CC) sometimes not.. Juniors are not allowed to compete for an International Certificate or CACIB, and very often neither are the veterans. so a dog gets its grading either Excellent, Very Good etc down to the 0, then it is placed when all have been gone over. after that in a lot of continental countries you will be asked do you want any CK or "certificate quality". or HP "prizes of honour". So if a dog is in lovely condition, moves well but not quite up to CC standard you could give him an HP. If you want to see him later in the line up for best dog then you would give him a CK. Usually as many as you like can get CK or HP, but usually the juniors can only get an HP at most, and sometimes you are not allowed to give juniors Excellents..
So intermediate class next , from 15mths to 2yrs, same again, then the working class in those breeds which have to qualify for other things, sometimes the CAC must only go to the winner of this class, quite confusing ! Then open which is open to all not champions in that country, after that usually the CACs are awarded with dogs placed down to 4th. champions next, and they too are graded, with the Very Goods or lower just leaving the ring with their write ups, So just the Excellents are left with the 4 dogs placed from the previous classes. then they have to be placed 1-4 (not letting yourself get confused with the order you put them in in the first place). All dogs you have given CK to will return to the ring, so it is wise not to be too generous with CK quality. The certificates don't always stay with the dog placed first, if ineligible for any reason, i.e. too young or not having a hip score or working test, the CAC will go down the line to the first eligible for it. the CACIB is confirmed by the FCI some months later, and the same can happen here.. so the same system to go through the bitches, and then the two come together for BIM or Best of Breed. Sometimes as happens always at world shows there are 6 in for BOB, the two juniors, best dog, best bitch and the two veterans who cannot compete for the certificates. More confusion can happen when the colour splits as in Danes or Cockers can all get the CACs but there is only one International CACIB, per sex.. all very exciting isn't it?
